Tour Option 1: A Fenland Tour - Wednesday 24 June 20099am Meet your coach and guide on Queen's Road in Cambridge (at the official coach drop-off point). Drive through the Fen landscape, a flat expanse of land, much of it reclaimed from its watery past; a place of tranquillity where anything above sea-level is considered Highlands! Your guide will regale you with tales of the rich folklore and history of the region. Ely Cathedral will soon appear on the horizon, like a huge ship sailing through the Fens. After your guided tour of this historic cathedral, take time to view the magnificent Lady Chapel, recently re-opened after a major restoration.
Drive through more Fens landscape to the picturesque village of Hemingford Grey, where you will have lunch in a traditional village inn.
It is a short walk from here to the Manor House, reputedly the oldest inhabited house in England, where you will be welcomed by the House's owner Diana Boston. Time afterwards to stroll through the delightful gardens. Back to Queen's Road in Cambridge by 5pm. Tour Option 2: Essex Countryside Tour - Thursday 25 June 20099am Meet your coach and guide on Queen's Road in Cambridge (at the official coach pick-up point). Drive to the south of Cambridge and discover a gentle, rolling landscape. First visit of the day is to Audley End House, one of the finest Jacobean mansions in England. You will be guided around the house, with its magnificent collections and also see the recently restored Victorian gardens. Lunch will be in an olde worlde pub in a picturesque setting - thatched houses, cottage gardens, a stream running by the main street... the quintessential English village!
After lunch it is a short drive to the historic market town of Saffron Walden. Following a walking tour to visit the church and view some of the elaborately plastered buildings there will be some free time to wander around some of the town's renowned antique shops. At the end of this tour you will begin to realise why, in a recent nationwide poll, this area of north Essex was voted the best place to live in the UK! Back to Queen's Road, Cambridge by 5pm.
